As part of Athy Irish Sign Language (ISL) Festival 2020, Athy Sing and Sign commissioned a new mural the by acclaimed street artist Solus Art, Derek O’Sullivan. The artwork intends to balance strength and beauty together, hence the ballerina and the boxing gloves. It is also a symbol of overcoming obstacles.
The ballerina wears a hearing aid and the mural is accompanied by the word ‘strong’ in text and ISL Alphabet, promoting inclusiveness. On Culture Night Athy Sing & Sign celebrates this mural screening this short film in which their members sign the song ‘There’s Something Inside So Strong’ by Labi Siffre.
